managing your personal finance

Your Money: The Missing Manual

This is the best user-guide to personal finance I've found, and I've probably read them all. It is certainly the sanest and most level-headed. There are no get rich quick schemes here, just plenty of ways to get rich slowly. Indeed, Get Rich Slowly was the name of author's very popular personal finance blog, which led to this book. J.D. Roth takes the great investing advice of Andrew Tobias in The Only Investment Guide You'll Ever Need, and he summarizes the life-earning wisdom in the previously reviewed (and still recommended) book Five Rituals of Wealth and he includes the needed crystalization of priorities found in Your Money or Your Life, and financial motivations from Suze Orman and the Millionaire Next Door and then adds key insights and tips from hundreds of other lesser-known money gurus.

Basically, Roth has read every book and blog on money managing, investing, saving, and earning and digests and integrates all this hard-won knowledge into an amazing selection of smart, practical ideas for today. I could hardly turn a page without learning a solid investing tip or two, or a clever way to save a few hundred dollars, or an example of something I already knew, but was looking for a vivid way to teach my kids. I like the fact that Roth emphasizes the value of sharing whatever wealth you have, and keeps returning to the long view.

I would not call this an inspirational book (plenty of those on the shelves), nor even a memorable book like the ones mentioned above. Rather it is what is advertised: a day-to-day operating manual for your money. Specific details, sources, methods, tricks. Dip into it when you are stuck, check it before trying something new, re-read it when you think you know it all. I've done pretty well financially, and if you were to ask me my practical advice -- like what to do tomorrow -- I would simply give you this book. It's slow, but true.

"Your Money: The Missing Manual," by J.D. Roth (2010, 336 pages)

Making Money Marketing

“It remains to be seen if it’s good in the long run but what’s exciting is Amazon has proven the ability to move product,” said Ben Gottlieb, president of mobile app maker Stand Alone Inc. “It all depends on the implementation. But if they live up to what they say, we can make more money.”

That’s a real issue. Gottlieb, who sells a crossword app, says he makes 20-30 times more selling his apps in the App Store compared to Android Market. It’s gotten a little better lately, but it’s still discouraging trying to sell in Android Market, which has more than 80,000 apps. Developers like Gottlieb say the store needs more recommendation and discovery tools, more categories, a better check-out system and more marketing muscle. These are all things that Amazon could immediately address.

Arron La, maker of the Advanced Task Manager app, said Amazon could help ignite sales by giving better recommendation tips and making checkouts easier for users. He said Google Checkout can be a nightmare at times, sometimes charging people multiple times for one app. A reliable and familiar system like Amazon’s could prompt people to open up their wallets, something they don’t do that much of in the Android Market. He also hopes that Amazon will do more to promote apps and advertise its app store, which Google has shied away from.

Google, for its part, is working on a number of changes, including a new web-based Android Market and a reported deal with PayPal  for payments. And it just expanded the number of countries that can buy paid apps.Even with those improvements, La feels better about Amazon because the company seems more committed to making money, something Google seems less interested in. Google claims it doesn’t make any money from Android Market.

“Once you have the right things in place and you get that ecosystem going, you can definitely make money out of it,” he said. “But that’s been what’s hurting Android Market. Everyone using Google devices, they want and expect everything for free. When Google released Android market, they had no paid apps in the beginning.”

To be sure, an Amazon Android store or a similar market from Verizon Wireless could be a headache for developers. Developers would have to get in the habit of submitting and updating apps in multiple markets. Users might get confused as to who to turn to for apps or support. Amazon will have the ability to turn down apps and has stated it won’t approve offensive or pornographic content. It could lead to some gripes from developers about rejected apps, similar to complaints about the App Store, and it’s unclear if it will be as easy as one click to buy an app and get it on an Android device.

If Amazon proves to be a real player in the app market, expect a lot of developers to look Amazon’s way. They’ll be happy to get something closer to an App Store experience for their apps. “Apple is about the making the whole experience pleasant while Google is just focused on getting the job done and it’s not always pretty,” Gottlieb said. “Amazon is somewhere in between and it’s definitely closer to Apple than Google.”

  • Why Carriers Still Hold the Key to Handset Sales

Amazon today announced that it’s “reaching out to publishers and accomplished writers” to produce 10,000 to 30,000 word “Kindle Singles”, which it says equals about “twice the length of a New Yorker feature” but not “long enough to deliver the “heft” required for book marketing and distribution.” Do you know who is going to love this? Academics, that’s who.

Which is exactly who Amazon is targeting with Kindle Singles.

While buying (paper) books on Amazon has been a staple of the college scene for a decade, we’re pretty sure that Amazon still hasn’t hit the stride that it would like to have with college eBook and/or Kindle sales. The bookseller tried to push the Kindle DX onto the education market, but it was too big and too expensive. Sorry Amazon, but that’s the truth. Beyond that, teachers/professors are often locked into paper book deals, and it’s pretty hard to make a class full of students drop $300+ on a ereader just so they can participate in class.

However, things are rapidly changing. Not only is the Kindle 3 WiFi model a very reasonable $139 (and we wouldn’t be surprised at all if it drops to $99 for the holidays), but Amazon now has Kindle apps for nearly every smartphone, as well as for the iPad, so the hardware barrier has been greatly reduced. That said, there is still those pesky paper books to deal with – and Amazon’s answer to bridge to gap between now and when all reading is done electronically (which of course will happen some day) would seem to Kindle Singles.

How could Kindle Singles help to bridge that gap? Well, back to the press release Amazon put out today:

“Today’s announcement is a call to serious writers, thinkers, scientists, business leaders, historians, politicians and publishers to join Amazon in making such works available to readers around the world. Ideas and the words to deliver them should be crafted to their natural length, not to an artificial marketing length that justifies a particular price or a certain format”

“Serious writers, thinkers, scientists” and “historians” sure sounds like college professors to us, and the length of the Singles is about exactly what a serious academic journal article or research paper comes out to, isn’t it? Those articles certainly are “crafted to their natural length” more or less, and academic book publishers – unless the book is an edited selection of essays – don’t touch those kinds of article with a ten foot pole: they simply can’t sell them. In academic circles, however, journal articles are the meat in the college sandwich, and right now on the Kindle, these are mainly read as PDFs. However, give academics the opportunity to not only get their writings out to “readers around the world”, but also make some money (especially without having to give their cut to the publishers) in the process…they are going to line up to write Singles, and Amazon knows it.

That said, for right now, Amazon is playing nice with publishers by saying “we’re reaching out to publishers and accomplished writers” but that is just a nicety that Amazon has to do at this point. In the not-too-distant-future, we fully expect Amazon to open this up to many more people – especially hungry-to-get-published-academics. When those young, hip, professors and teaching assistants can point their students to their latest journal article/Kindle Single on Amazon.com, then we’ll start to see the real tipping point in academics towards ereading.

Kindle Singles are nothing short of brilliant on Amazon’s part.

Verizon Wireless Crediting Customers $90 Million for Mistaken Internet Charges

Verizon phones have a habit of making it all too easy to connect to their admittedly widely available data network, including the "$2 for pressing the 'Up' button charges that the New York Times' David Pogue skewered. Now the wireless firm is giving 15 million customers up to $90 million for those kinds of inadvertent access charges, along with compensating for applications that access the data network without notifying the user. Look for a $2 or $4 credit on your next Verizon bill, and if you believe you're owed the credit, ring them up.

Skit Ideas Not Even Good Enough for Saturday Night Live

Jimmy Guterman (website, blog, twitter) writes, edits, and produces things.

Thanks for the welcome, Mark. It's good to be back. I hope to deliver posts with substance. This, though, won't be one of them.

The Internet loves lists and it loves witnessing people get embarrassed. So let me start my stint with a list about a failure of mine.

I recently got a new Mac at work, and since I'm one of those losers who needs to have everything he has on a local hard disk (you never know when you're going to have to watch a scene from This Is Spinal Tap right now), I ported everything over from my Mac (now my son's) to the new one. But the new one has a slightly smaller hard disk than the old one, so I had to go through some directories to purge some files. A few big files were easy to get rid of (I am never going to listen to Metal Machine Music again), but I wound up looking at some directories I hadn't seen in a long, long time. How long ago? Before Axl Rose started recording Chinese Democracy long ago. In one such directory, there was a file called SNL.DOC. What could that be? I double-clicked.

In the mid-90s, I worked for Delphi, an early proprietary online service. We were Rent-a-Wreck to AOL's Hertz. We had some significant firsts (one day I'll tell the story of how we talked the Rolling Stones' reps into making us the band's official online service for free) and we were briefly overfunded (News Corp. bought us during one of its intermittent sessions of new-media panic), but the venture failed. For a brief time, before I went solo, I was living in Massachusetts (where I still am) while my job had migrated to Manhattan, so I went back and forth from home to job a few times each week. This went on for only a few months, but it felt like a long time at the time. Hey, that is a long time to be away from your family.

Anyway, from my hotel I could see the NBC building, and one gets bored sitting alone in a hotel room at night, so I started writing ideas for NBC shows. (Then as now, I didn't watch much TV, so I got most of my story notions from the ads for the shows I saw around Times Square.) One night, after a session of Coca-Cola and sushi, I scribbled several dozen ideas for Saturday Night Live. Fueled by insomnia, homesickness, caffeine, sugar, and probably mercury, I thought so much of my ideas that the next day I snuck into the floor at 30 Rockefeller Plaza where the show's offices were and dropped off a package. I returned to the Delphi office, certain that the phone would ring ... right ... now.

The file SNL.DOC contained my proposal to Saturday Night Live. It sketched out 36 skits. Most of them were sub-mediocre at best. The worst involved the viewers' knowing what McHale's Navy was, a dubious proposition. Here are the least bad of the pitches:

Much like a driving test, a teen couple that wants to become sexually active has to pass a test with a tester in the bed with them, grading and commenting on their every move.

Hollywood executives convene a pitch meeting for the Speed sequel, with ridiculous concepts, such as Sloth, in which the bus must stay under 10 mph.

Folks sit in a movie audience and their entertainment is not the film itself, but trying to guess who on the screen is gay.

Chris Farley is a Mary Kay salesman. (Hey, this was a long time ago.)

A couple eats lunch at a McDonald's set up like a high-end eatery; they ask the waiter questions like "How is the root beer today?"

A Schindler's List parody called Schneider's List, based on the character from the sitcom One Day at a Time

An ATM dispenses items other than money, such as taxis, advice, and photos with NBC celebrities

Folks watch absurdly interactive TV, where viewers can do wild things with a remote.

A bona-fide emergency happens on the set of ER and disasters ensue.

The joke, if there was one, was on me. I hadn't watched SNL regularly since Emily Litella was a recurrent character, so I had no idea whether these ideas for skits would have made any sense for the show. I was surprised the day after I dropped off the package when I didn't hear back. I was disappointed the second day. By the third day, I was on to the next scheme.

If you are looking to make money on the internet, guess what? You haven't found it if you're clicking on fifty 2-cent emails per day. You're not even close if you are solely writing ten articles a day. What you really need to make money on the internet is a clenched left hand and an open right hand. The clenched fist gets violent, and the open hand does the taking. Why is this the real way to make money online? Let me explain.

The amount of research you have to do on the internet to find the best money-making technique is overwhelming.
Not only that, it's also very time consuming. It can take a person months and months to discover that gpt programs might not be worth the trouble and writing articles might take too much time. It could take a year or two to find out both of these things if you're working a full time job while trying to make money on the side. If you are a stay-at-home mom, things will be a bit easier for you, however.

Making money on the internet isn't easy, and failure can be very saddening.
Many people lose a lot of money while trying to make money on the internet. It's one thing to fail at something, but it's a completely different thing to lose the little money you have to your name while doing it. Also, there is a popular saying that goes like this: Time equals money. So if you've wasted a lot of time trying out ways of making money on the internet that don't work for you, you might also feel as though you've wasted a lot of money. Usually, people looking to make money on the intternet don't have money to spend in the first place so it can be very disheartening for them to lose so much while gaining nothing.

Making money on the internet takes a lot of work, and it takes time and mistakes to figure that out.
"We'll pay you top dollar for simple data entry!" Does that sound familiar? It's a common ad that can be found on reputable classified sites like Craigslist, and even sometimes Careerbuilder. They ask for a simple fee for materials, and you think to yourself, "Well, it's only ten dollars. " But you just don't how many ten-dollar suckers are born every minute. And it may take you a while to learn than truth. You may lose some money. You may lose some time, and you could even lose your courage to get up and try to make money on the internet once again, the real way which includes doing some actual work.

So here's what you must steal to make money on the internet and why you have to do it.

Steal the wisdom of others. Steal their mistakes, and their wasted-money stories. Steal their, "Oh nos." and their " I really blew its." You can find these things on blogs and in forums. When you steal the research and mistakes of others, remember to take it by force until you figure out what plan worked for someone else and is now going to work for you.

Affiliate Making Money

Shopping platform Shwowp aspires to be“a Tripit plus Blippy plus Mint for shopping.” Founded by Internet marketer Tara Hunt, Shwowp (in the same space as RightCliq) attempts to grapple with the issue of all our purchase data being siloed across multiple retailers like Amazon, Bluefly, etc by trying to corral our diverse shopping history into one place.

Shwowp users can make a purchase, forward the receipt or order information to wow@shwowp.com and the service will synch that info to their account. Once there a user can change their own data, view their buying patterns and share information about the shopping experience like how long it took to get to the store, availability, how influenced they were by what their friends were buying and so on and so forth.

Of course the end of goal of this is a serving up a personal RFP in order make shopping data more useful, i.e. provide customers with targeted discounts based on their buying history.

Founder Hunt asserts that currently data is “one sided” and hopes that the fully portable Shwowp platform will make sure that customers really take advantage of their own data and get the shopping experience they needed.

Currently in the friends and family stage of funding, Shwowp plans on making money through affiliate advertising, coupons, opt-in vendor deals, data reporting as well as API usage.  They’re targeting the female market primarily, at $37 million dollars a year.

A: We’re not like Blippy, we’re not a sharing platform in way More interested in signaling part and data portability part. Have an export button on the website.

LL: Leaves me with idea that we want to share what we buy.

A: Our target market is women, because they control 4.3 trillion of spending. And they often shop online and share about products.

JS: I wouldn’t mind sharing my data online as long as I was getting economic benefit.

A: Biggest part is data portability…

JH: Love that you’re thinking big. Practical point, I feel like if you have opportunity to streamline what you’re asking users..

A: We have a lot of steps currently because we’re optimizing for privacy.

DD: I think this idea is deeper than you could convey in six minutes. Data portability, that sort of thing. I think it’s pretty powerful. Getting offers to come to you based on your interests. Would suggest your data is already being shared anyway, you just don’t know it.

JS: Reminds me of end-of-year American Express summary, the thought I could turn that around and get paid for it is compelling.

Here’s all you need to know…

Gavin Newsom is Nancy Pelosi’s nephew.

Nancy Pelosi’s son (Gavin Newsom’s cousin), Paul Pelosi, Jr., heads and advises many of the San Francisco level gov’t agencies and “foundations” (even holding the position of “Special Adviser on the Environment to the Director of the NASA Ames Research Center”) spending SF’s share of stimulus money on federally mandated and nearly fully stimulus funded environmental and algae biofuel projects. Which companies like Honeywell, Solazyme, Unilever, and a dozen or so other SF headquartered corporations and biofuel start-ups are benefiting from. Biofuel projects which were once headed by Obama’s Sec. of Energy, Steven Chu.

SF is desperately trying to become to the biofuel industry, what Houston is to the oil and gas industry. With the progressive’s push to shift America away from conventional energy…one begins to see the benefit of this new sought feather for the city of SF’s cap.

The only thing likely motivating Newsom’s comments is that SF didn’t receive more or all of CA’s share of stimulus. Once all of SF’s progressive elites have begun profiting off their biofuel “investments,” there will be more lobster and bj parties to be had. Win/win for Newsom any way you look at it.

How many time have you seen this?

Want to make some extra money writing your content for online publications? Don't listen to the billion dollar industry selling you information on how to become and internet millionaire.

While surfing the web looking for the next million dollar explosion, you'll notice most websites, ebooks, blogs and even print media all sell you on the same things.

" A smart person would take advantage of this low introductory rate now."
After reading this psychological phrase you click now and buy the information.

Four or five chapters into the publication you begin to vision yourself doing exactly what the author did and begin signing up for the same sites he's affiliated with. Clicking this link signing up for this that and the other.
adparams.getadspec('c_billboard1');

Days, weeks months go by you get your first 20.00 deposited into your paypal account and the guy who sold you the publication in the first place made the $10.00 upfront for your generous contribution than he made an additional 2.00 or 10% of what your worked so hard for.

What? confused yet good cause I am going to explain this in the simplest terms Helium permits. Your millionaire mentor who wanted to give you the secrets of making money has shown you first hand how it's done.

"We learn by doing we earn by teaching." Teaching and selling information works.
Step by Step: 1.) You purchased the one book, PDF file or newsletter.
a) a book full of information on how to get more information , sign up and write or click the banner on such and such website but WAIT you have to order this package to generate 2 million visitors to your site.
2.) Go to Godaddy and register a web name for under 10.00 than you can host and design your very own website free.
3.)Add his banners to your site than sign up free to post writings on someone else site.

Are you gaining the idea yet? The guy who wrote the book compiled information. Information and teaching sells. The guy who sold you that book in step 1 was an affiliate of the guy who wrote it. He was also an affiliate of godaddy, an affiliate of the content writing site. He was also an affiliate of the guy who sold you the 2 million site visitors package.

Months later you finally get enough visitors to your site that you earned a whopping $20.00 The guy who sold you the book, remember him, he made $8.00 from the book , $2.00 from godaddy (more if you purchased additional products.) He made $4.50 from the site generator guy and now he wants you to add his affiliated banner code to your site. He'll offer you a cut in the banner click money pit. Why not he already made $14.50 and all he did was show you his affiliated site. Don't you expect alittle more?

Can you duplicate this? Sure you can but he never told you that in the book. He just sent you to another affiliated site the same he has done with the last 200 people he sent. Each time they sell or make money he gets 5-10% of it. Another $ 2.00. Just from you. Imagine what he does in his spare time?

Goto http://www.googleradioblogs.com and listen to the radio show talking about marketing. Notice how whatever the segment topic is for the day thats the banners or links talked about and displayed on the profile page. He's doing great giving away free information than directing you on how you can better your marketing by creating better sites links in certain areas.

Honestly the show is great they never ask you to buy anything offer free advice and you can join the Radio Hosting social network group FREE http://radiohosts.ning.com

Never work to hard for one writing site. Have a few of them working harder for you. Make sure you utilize and market different avenues and sell your writing. Never give up, let corrective criticism teach you to write better. Even I need work on that. I belong to 5 different writing groups that I somehow manage and get lucky at making some money from. Doing what I enjoy doing....WRITING

Proper grammar, spelling and sentence structure is a gift to editors. " A real driven writer who stands out from the crowd is one who has an imagination compassion and in some cases sick sick sense of humor " The amazing and gifted writer Steven King has an editor. That's who an editor is. Makes sure your piece is fit to be published.

Have some basic 8th grade writing ability as most adults only read that level anyhow. " IT'S WHATS IN THE STORY OR ARTICLE THAT SELLS." The information not the letters.

Not all of your writings will be what these writing sites are looking for. If it does not sell on Helium maybe it will do well on another site. Branch out. Do not submit to all your sites at once.

Hope you learned from this and remember the old phrase you heard over and over and abused by marketing wizards," We make more by helping others?" I rephrased it , " You make more by teaching others and selling information."

My next article will be about a site I really enjoy writing about. Buyers post what they need not just businesses but people like you and I and they will offer 20.00-35.00 for a letter of some subject. The site url will displayed when I publish the feature.

While you wait look at Some of my other favorite sites.

http://www.associatedcontent.com
http://www.SocialSpark.com
http://www.newsvine.com ( great for seeding your writings make sure it's a newsworthy story an Danit self promotion)
