A charter bus, which was transporting a college baseball team from Ohio crossed over several lanes of traffic and plunged off of a highway ramp, early Friday morning. The bus crashed onto the pavement below the ramp, killing 6 people and injuring 29 more. Sports equipment was scattered across the road, according to authorities.
The bus driver and his wife both died in the crash. Also dead were 6 students. There were 29 injured transported to area hospitals. for injuries. Some students have critical injuries. There were reports of internal injuries and broken bones, according to reports boradcase on NBC.
The bus was carrying a team from Bluffton University, which is a close knit Mennonite-affiliated school.
The bus landed on a pickup truck on Interstate 75, whortly before dawn. The impact broke the windshield and pushed the truck into concrete, but truck driver Danny Lloyd, 57, of Frostburg, MD was not injured.
A student was interviewed live on NBC. Reportedly the student had a broken collar bone, but spoke to reporter stating that they were concerned for the other students and that he wished he could do more for the families.The student's brother had been taken to the hospitial with hip injuries.
Piedmont hospital spokeswoman, Diana Lewis, made a statement that the team's29 year old coach, James Grandey, was in serioius condition and expected to improve.
School President James Harder told reporters "This is a profound and tragic day in the life of Bluffton University".
Bluttron University canceled classes; They school called off other sports trips planned during their weeks spring break, according to Harder. There were no details on the identities of those killed and injured. President Harder stated, "This is deeply impacting all of our students, faculty and staff. We know these people on a first name basis. For now we're pulling together and supporting each other as best we can."
Students on campus, along with community residents, gathered in the school's basketball gyn to grieve together and received updates about the day's evernts.
Bluffton Universtiy is a Mennonite affiliated university with about 1,150 students. The school is located about 50 miles shouth of Toledo, Ohio.
The baseball team was traveling to Sarasota, Florida for their first season game. The team was scheduled to play against the Eastern Mennonite Collele of Harrisonburg, Virginia. The team had eight more games scheduled in Fort Myers, Florida.
